Driving around my Summit Avenue hood for the better part of an hour the other night had me shaking my fist at the parking gods. But suddenly the warm glow of low light and cozy tables topped with candles called out to me from the north end of Bellevue Avenue. Where once was a sleepy greengrocer now stood a beacon in the night: Artemis, a bustling bar/cafe filled with folks throwing back cocktails and munching from plates that looked mouthwatering (better, at least, than the overpriced pizza takeout place up the street, the only other food option west of Broadway). The stars aligned. I found a spot and headed in. I was greeted at the door of the comfy, rectangular, loftlike space with all the available options: "Dinner? Drinks? Dessert?" I started with drinks. My $9 Bartlett Sidecar (after seeing what the dollar is worth abroad right now, suddenly a 10-spot for a drink doesn't seem so steep) was perfectly shaken with fresh pear brandy. Within minutes it was joined by a plate of Mediterranean delights (orange-spiced olives, warm pita and creamy hummus, garlic braised greens), courtesy of head chef Chris Hunter—who hails from Etta's and Jazz Alley—and rousing conversation ("your ex-boyfriend did what?!") with friendly, forthcoming bar mates. Open until 2 a.m. (Tuesday–Saturday), the three-week old Artemis has the dangerous capacity to quickly become a new home away from home.
