The last drag performance I took in was a dreadfully tacky nightmare in Moscow, Idaho. The drag queens looked like Vegas hookers, the air outside stunk of manure, and at a time when their effects were most needed, the drinks were weak. But I’m willing to give the performing art of drag another shot because the faaabulous six-foot-two queen simply known as Edieis gracing Seattle with her presence for one evening only. Voted New York’s Best Drag Performer, Edie channels her idols Audrey Hepburn and Liza Minnelli in a one-woman cabaret show she’s opened for Cyndi Lauper with. Her Web site blog left me in fits of giggles, in which she bitches about having to get pizza after eating a “retarded” $300 meal and schemes to get Madonna’s attention by showcasing her pet Chihuahua (mission failed). She may have numerous brushes with fame these days, but this diva’s original stomping grounds are our very own Pacific Northwest; Edie (real name, Christopher Kenney) grew up in Portlandand spent several years working as a professional ballet dancer in Seattle. I figure anyone hired to dance professionally has got some talent. I checked Edie’s schedule and she doesn’t plan to be in Idaho anytime soon, so this could very well be the real deal.
