Are Mexicans Racist Toward Black People?

Dear Mexican,

I welcome the inclusion of a nice big scoop of chopped habaneros in the bland casserole that is America. Must admit, however, it gave me pause the other day when I saw an all-too-typical familia of recent arrivals at K-Mart: mom, pop, and four kids less than 5 years old—nine months and a day apart, tops—with another one or two in the oven. I have problems with any culture that thinks they've got the green light from God to breed like flies and then brings that philosophy to our rapidly despoiling country. If Bach were alive today, I'd say, "Nice fugue. Now what's with the 20 kids, asshole?" In the past, we've seen the same multiplying mind-set in immigrants from other Catholic countries (hello, Kennedys!), but it seems with assimilation and the concurrent increase in prosperity, their fertility rates take a nose-dive after two or three generations. Will Jesús and María someday wake up and realize they no longer need six sons to scratch in the dirt to survive—or the eight daughters that came along while they were trying for sons?

Árbol Abrazar

Dear Tree to Hug,

You must not enjoy that spicy casserole too much since you compare Mexicans to maggots, ¿qué no? Nevertheless, even a blind pig finds the jalapeño once in a while. A 2002 study by the Public Policy Institute of California (PPIC) found that while first-generation Mexican and Central American women in California averaged about 2.4 children, those in the second generation only birthed about 1.4 niños. Strangely, third-generation Mexican women averaged bigger litters than the second, an anomaly that the PPIC report attributed to—I'm not making this up—how mujeres identify themselves. According to researchers Laura E. Hill and Hans P. Johnson, "It is likely that women who identify as of Mexican or Central American ancestry have higher fertility than women who have at least one grandparent born in Mexico or Central America but who do not identify as of Mexican or Central American ancestry." The Mexican has a more plausible theory: Third-generation mexicanas must deal with sluttier morals and the indefatigable Mexican spermatozoon, a war as Sisyphean as our latest Operation Wetback.

After asking my dad about black people in Mexico, it almost seemed as if Mexicans don't like speaking about black people in their country. I think it's strange that Mexico, unlike many other Latin American countries, doesn't have a big black community, and the blacks that it does have seem to be shunned. Are us Mexicans racist towards black people?

Ay Mami, Que Será Lo Que Tiene el Negro

Dear Wab,

In a word, . But Mexican racism toward negritos is different than the kind practiced by gabachos. Although the Spaniards imported hundreds of thousands of African slaves to Mexico, most of them either died off or jumped into the country's mestizaje with gusto. Mexico's African community has never been particularly large or distinctive as a result—the current count is about 1 percent of Mexico's 105 million souls, and most live in the coastal states of Guerrero and Veracruz. With such a small population in a country where white means might, modern-day Afro-Mexicans don't encounter the type of oppression experienced by blacks in the United States. Really, the worst stings they suffer are mass-media depictions as Sambo-like caricatures—the best example remains Memín Pingüin, a beloved, virtuous comic-book character who looks like a gorilla with a hat. But the times, as Bob Dylan once howled, are cambiando. One of Univisión's current telenovelas, Destilando Amor (Distilling Love), recently featured a subplot involving the daughter of a white-as-snow Mexican family dating an Afro-Mexican. The positive portrayal of the negrito in Destilando Amor means there's hope for Mexicans to become as politically correct as gabachos.

Why do people say "mexicans are not racist" as if everyone in the entire race is the same? Sorry but yes their is mexicans who are racist just like their are blacks and whites who are racist. And at the same time their are mexicans whites and blacks who are not racist. Stop putting everyone single person in groups and judging them by groups instead as individuals.

Do you realize how ignorant your comment is? So because "your" family is not racist that means no Mexican is racist? I hear people in my own Mexican family make racist comments all the time about other races. But at the same time I am not going to say that because of that all Mexicans are racist. There are people who are racist from every race and then there are people who are not racist. You so quickly label ever white person a racist because your bus driver is racist? That is so ignorant. I deal with white people every day and they are very nice people and I get along with them very well I respect them and they respect me. Grow up little girl and stop being so ignorant.

My parents are from Mexico, and I don't have a problem with recognizing that many Mexicans are racist, not only toward black people but also toward people who are of darker skin shades. In general, the more "white" you look in Mexico, the better. It's a sad thing, really. I've seen my own family & extended family say less-than-nice things toward my brother because he is darker than the rest of us. Honestly, I even feel sometimes that many Mexicans are truly hardcore conservatives who only vote democrat because of the whole immigration bandwagon issue. If you need more proof of what I'm saying, just watch one novela (soap opera) on univision, it's crystal clear. Luckily, though, most of the sons and daughters of Mexicans who are raised in the US are less likely to be so judgmental on skin shades, at least this is what I have experienced. I'm not saying that Mexicans in general are racist, NOOOO, that is NOT true. I'm saying that MANY are racist. Please remember that.

I am Afro Cuban and Italian and have lived on the west coast of the U.S all of my life. Mexicans have always been racist towards me because of the way I look (I look of mixed ancestry obviously, with with the skin and hair to match), and because they tell me they don't like the way I speak Spanish. The blacks and whites never had much to do with me either and always accused me of outright lying about my heritage, and the Asians just ignored me. It hurts because I am an Afro-Latina (who CAN speak spanish fine, thank you) who is not accepted by any ethnicity this side of the Mississippi. The crazy part is, if I moved to the East coast, no one would EVER second question me. I am tired of the viciousness Mexicans here in California put me through. It makes me not even want to speak Spanish with them unless absolutely necessary. I always get excited when I meet a boricua or fellow Cuban (or anyone who is from a Latin American country where there is a large black population too) because that is the only time I treated with kindness by people of Hispanic/Latino descent here in Cali. I am frustrated, and not sure how to handle it anymore. I prefer Spanish to English, although English was my first language and I do not even feel comfortable speaking it. Anyone got any advice?

I find no difference in the old south (rednecks) and the misguided racism that these wetbacks are displaying in our cities today towards blacks. But I think I do know the main reason for it and that is simply fear and jealousy. Amigo sees the black man as big, strong and smart, something he is not. Simply put, blacks represents a clear and present threat to everything he holds dear.

  • jasmine 05/12/2010 5:15:00 AM

We are all human beings and every person is different in either race, we should not stereotype anyone because is white, black or hispanic or asian people or indigenous people that is called "racism", to say all white people are like that or all hispanics are like that, that is ignorance, people should respect one another and north america is multicultural so it is good to learn to treat one another better; we are all different not better than anyone else.

  • Chas 04/05/2010 12:13:00 AM

You know there's racism all throughout Latin America, which of course includes Mexico. "Blacks" or Afro-Latinos are usually considered at the bottom in Latin American societies. So when Mexicans who are mostly Mestizos, come to the States they bring a certain amount of racial entitlement with them. You will notice on Spanish television and film there will hardly ever be any prominent "black" characters. Oh course, America is full of high profile AA icons. This must be like turning their world upside down for Mexicans. And you can't help but notice the looks that Mexicans give blacks who are driving nice cars and look very successful, while they're walking to their dishwashing job. Mexico actually had a lot of "blacks", over 10% of the population at its highest. The vast majority of these intermarried into the population, but there is still about 1% left. It's amazing that Mexicans don't know much about Afro-Mexicans because Afro-Mexicans were largely responsible for liberating Mexico from Spain in their was of independence. And the George Washington and Thomas Jefferson of Mexico were Afro-Mexicans.

Interesting. I wish everyone did not look down so much upon blacks and Afro- Mexicans. I think white skin is beautiful and dark skin is too! ~Nika

i lived in Los Angeles and i had latino friends . i was out side of MAP and i had on a red jogging out fit and i was called the n word and a gun pulled they were mexican. in east la they treat Black poorly

  • Daniel 05/11/2009 7:34:00 AM

Hispanics souless. Meaning they do not posses a human soul given by God. Instead they posses an Earth soul. It gives them life, a free will and even a personality, but they are not capable of humanity or empathy. They are and always will be racist and spread nothing but hate whereever they go as they are proving here. I have lived in many places in the U.S. Whenever Hispanics move into the area the drug deaths and racial tension goes up three fold between blacks and whites. Demons.

  • Charaine 05/20/2008 1:44:00 AM

I think that every race to certain extent plays into the stere types of other races. I live in San Diego my boyfriend is Mexican and I'm black most of my friends are Mexican and their family's embrace me as if I was one of their own. I think that once they got to know me their perception that all black people are bad or whatever, changed.

  • Greg 05/06/2008 7:02:00 PM

Its not negros dammit, Black is the term just Black people. Mexicans are cool with me however, there has been times esp. in San Antonio were you can see the ugly side. Besides, if you touch one those senoritas they yeild like 2.6 children and in todays society I couldnt afford that.

  • Me 04/22/2008 1:21:00 AM

Its not polite to use the term Negro its a derogatory term and its not nice- you claim Mexicans are not racist yet you use a derogatory term- how does that make sense?

  • Lisa Torres 01/19/2008 1:23:00 AM

I don't think Mexicans are racist against Negros. I think the Negros are racist to us. There is this man (negro) that told me he loved me and I liked him too. Well he told one of my friends that he did not like me because he does not do that mexican thang.
