Umi Sake House Pours on the Cheap a Little Longer Than the Rest

But you've gotta love the "porch."

At most spots in the city, happy hour specials are limited to a short, inconvenient window of time during hours when most people are stuck staring at computer screens instead of slurping down cocktails. Umi Sake House, however, lets you eat and drink on the cheap a little longer than the rest. The Belltown sushi spot, known for its extensive sake list, does offer a discounted menu from the standard 4 to 6 p.m. each day—but on their warm, wood (indoor) front “porch,” the deals last until 8. Sure, the limited location is a clear ploy to get people to sit in the window, but the extensive selection is worth being live bait to draw in passers-by. Crispy chile-and-lime calamari ($4) are perfectly light and crunchy, and the grilled garlic short ribs ($4) pack a flavorful punch. The Bad Boy roll ($4.50), with its crispy fried exterior that wraps a delicious combination of eel, avocado, cream cheese, and crab, could rival fried chicken with a side of mac ‘n’ cheese in the comfort-food department. It doesn’t end there, though: For those out tying one on in the neighborhood on a school night, Umi’s late happy hour (11 p.m.–1 a.m.) provides a fresh, upscale alternative to the many street-meat vendors who corner the late-night market. The smell of dogs on the grill might be tempting, but a large hot sake for a mere $5 paired with crispy prawns ($4) or the $8 sashimi set (tuna, shrimp, salmon, yellowtail, and albacore) takes drunken-dining prospects to a whole new level. 2230 First Ave., 374-8717.
