Situated on the main drag in Columbia City, Lottie's Lounge is a comfy neighborhood hangout, with a generous happy hour from 4 to 6 p.m. daily. Beers—including Westmalle Trippel and Lagunitas—are $2 a pop, with all well drinks and appetizers a mere $3. Populated with charmingly named options, the drink menu includes the Dark and Stormy: Myers's rum, Reed's ginger beer, and lime—a smart drink with a delicate kick. Also satisfying was the Dirty Old-Fashioned Bird ($7): Wild Turkey bourbon, muddled orange, and bitters over soda water, topped with a maraschino cherry. The highly recommended lasagna swirl ($8.50) was tasty, if a bit unwieldy: a tall pile of twirled pasta ringed around spicy marinara, spinach, zucchini, and the requisite ricotta, under a crusty skin of melted cheese (also available with sausage). Less fulfilling was the messy blue-cheese-sauce-doused roasted red potato skewers ($5/$3) on a bed of raw spinach. In the words of my dining companion: Shouldn't the spinach be wilted or something? We also enjoyed a rich, chunky artichoke and spinach dip ($5/$3), served with warm pita bread. This local hangout pours a good drink (our second round stiffer than the first) and offers substantial eats for not a lot of moola.
