Drippy New Year!

Cryophiliacs will have two ways to begin the new year with a splash. Sign up for the fifth annual Polar Bear Plunge at Matthews Beach, an event (sponsored by Seattle Parks and Recreation) which drew 800 people last Jan. 1 to take a stroll (up to your neck, or it doesn't count) into a 46-degree Lake Washington. That'll get you refreshments, a 2007 Official Patch of Courage, and a good party story. Costumes encouraged! 9300 51st Ave. N.E. Registration at 11:30 a.m., plunge at noon. Or join Club Northwest's 5K Resolution Run/Walk, which offers a "Trip-n-Drip" optional course that'll take you off a boat ramp into the lake for a reinvigorating dip (here, full submersion is required) just before the finish line, where cocoa and chili await. Organizers are expecting that over half of the 1,000 estimated participants will choose to take the icy detour. I myself will be home drinking mimosas in my robe and slippers that morning, but I'll be with you in spirit. Run begins and ends at Hangar 27, Magnuson Park, 729-9972, www.promotionevents.com. Registration ($10–$30) begins at 9 a.m., race at 10:30. GAVIN BORCHERT
