The Magic Flute

The Northwest Puppet Center's annual puppet opera includes live singers and musicians (some of Seattle's finest), with "lip-syncing" performed by the gorgeously carved and painted yard-high Carter Family Marionettes in lavishly detailed miniature sets. In 2005, they turned to Mozart's something-for-everyone fairy tale The Magic Flute (with the score rearranged for a chamber quartet led by Margriet Tindemans and three other stars of Seattle's early-music scene), in a 90-minute reduction that preserves the composer's musical versatility: folk songs for Papageno the bird catcher, a coloratura aria with high F's for the Queen of the Night, and for Sarastro (pictured) and his magical brotherhood, solemn chorales that, as G.B. Shaw put it, constitute "the only music yet written that would not sound out of place in the mouth of God." As a special holiday treat, the Seattle Channel is broadcasting the performance. Lip Sync Inferno

Buy Nothing Day activists (or were they?) brandishing "Hurry! Buy More Stuff!" signs at Fifth Avenue and Pike Street on Black Friday might want to move their operation north the day after Christmas, where Canadians observe Boxing Day everywhere but in retail. Here, they'll just get lost in the crowd reluctantly trudging back to work. Maxing and relaxing is for the lucky with unused vacation time, so if that's you, here's one way to while away the hours: Lip Sync Inferno. It's one in a long line of wacky events at the Can Can—a dimly lit, subterranean spot in the Market where cabaret and cabernet (not to mention expertly crafted cocktails) frequently collide in displays of sensuous whimsy. The idea tonight is to "dress the part" (organizers could not be reached for comment on the context: a gingerbread man? a French floozy? Madonna?), bring your iPod or CD, and lip-sync to your favorite song onstage. Happy hour extends all night (under $4 for eats, drafts, wells, and wine), so the drunken audience judges and doles out prizes.
