News The Seattle Tilth Association, which teaches organic gardening and promotes sustainable practices, was one of the winners of the Governor's Award for Pollution Prevention and Sustainable Practices. Frito-Lay, Inc. (in Vancouver, Wash.) was another winner. The new downtown Whole Foods Market at 2200 Westlake Ave. opens Wednesday, Nov. 8, with all of your favorite accoutrements: an olive bar, many offerings of grass-fed, compassionately grown meats, organic and locally sourced produce, and a new grill-while-you-wait feature in the seafood department. Will this spot satisfy the hankering for a downtown grocery store? Perhaps try a stroll on your lunch break to check out the wares? There are 277 parking spaces, so you desperate-to-be-there-on-opening-day shoppers should have no trouble parking. On Madrona's 34th Street, what was Drey's (and before that, Sapphire) is set to become Coupage, a vintner's term for blending. The restaurant, which will offer a mixed Korean/French menu, is run by Tom Hurley of Portland, whose restaurant there, Hurley's French, has been raved about in Gourmet magazine. Tacoma's University of Puget Sound has been nominated as one of PETA's (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) 30 Most Vegetarian-Friendly Colleges in America. Food and/or beverage news? E-mail food@seattleweekly.com Farm Fresh This week's crop of fresh local produce includes many strange and wonderfully named varieties of apple, including: Spitzenburg, White Winter Permain, Smokehouse, and Belle de Boskoop. Also available are edamame three ways: on the vine, in the pod, or shelled, and haricots verts. Just a few farmers markets run year round (including Pike Place and Ballard). Check out the Broadway Farmers Market before it closes for the season. On the Plate Monday, November 13 Co-hosted by Intiman Theatre, enjoy a three-course themed meal while being regaled by gospel tunes performed by cast members of their upcoming production of Black Nativity. Chef Gavin Stephenson prepares "Go Tell It on the Mountain" salad of organic greens, "Loaves and Fishes" steamed sea bass or shepherd's hearth roasted lamb loin, and "Hallelujah!" chocolate flourless pâté. $65 (includes valet parking). 5:45 p.m. reception, 6 p.m. dinner.
