Just off the Delridge Way exit from the West Seattle Bridge, you’ll find Skylark Cafe & Club, a genuine blue-collar cafe, with a meat and potatoes menu. I savored Skylark’s delicious, sausage-rich meatloaf with mashed potatoes and gravy ($9.25), though the accompanying broccoli was plain, microwaved, with absolutely nothing on it. No butter, so salt, no pepper. A bit more artful was the Real Philly Cheese Steak ($8.75) with a cup of jus for dipping the crunchy baguette. Spilling grilled steak, melty white American cheese, sautéed onions, peppers, and mushrooms, the sandwich was irresistible. I couldn’t keep my hands off it. Happy hour is Monday through Friday, 3 to 7 p.m., with $4 dinner specials from 4 to 6 p.m., including the Skylark Burger, a half pound of Angus beef ($4/$8.95 normally), and the Ghetto Platter, a fry-happy basket piled with chicken tenders, tater tots, and onion rings ($4/$9.95)—a perfect late-night snack. With a line of taps that includes Manny’s Pale Ale, Guinness, Fat Tire Amber Ale, and the requisite Pabst Blue Ribbon, all for $2.50 a pint during Happy Hour, this is an easy place to get fed and watered on the cheap.
