Scandinavian countries boast some of the most liberal societies on earth; right next door, the three Baltic republics only recently shook off decades of Soviet domination. Generous state support vs. top-down aesthetic control; a tradition of artistic autonomy vs. a new freedom to explore previously discouraged musical paths. What does all this mean for the artists and art of these countries? The Seattle Chamber Players welcome back six of the most interesting and engaging composers from these areas, participants in their recent "Icebreaker" festivals, for premieres of SCP-commissioned works.
