News Wayne Johnson, chef at Andaluca, has been named one of the six best African-American chefs in the nation by Black Enterprise magazine. Under Johnson's direction for the past seven years, Andaluca has won such awards as "Most Romantic Restaurant" and "Best Breakfast." Pam Parks, a favorite employee of Pagliacci Pizza'sU District shop, is retiring after nearly 25 years, and the store will celebrate her service at 2 p.m. Wednesday, June 28. Known for her sweet disposition, she's become something of a U District institution. Pam has Down Syndrome, and was one of the first people who faces the challenge of a mental disability that the pizza company hired. On June 17, Campagne's wine steward, Jake Kosseff,won Best Young Sommelier in a national competition held in Sonoma, Calif., by the Chaine de Rotisseurs, an international gastronomic society founded in Paris in 1950. Familiar to oenophiles in Woodinville and Kirkland, Purple Cafe & Wine Bar will open its first downtown Seattle location on July 10, at Fourth Avenue and University Street. Housing over 5,000 bottles, a 20-foot floor-to-ceiling wine tower will be the focal point of the restaurant. Spry servers will climb a spiral staircase to fetch your chosen beverage. Anther new spot downtown is BOKA (an acronym for "bold, original kitchen artistry"), which just opened on the corner of Madison Street and First Avenue. The menu features such temptations as Dungeness crab cupcakes, a classic grilled cheese sandwich, Thai clam chowder, and a white peach cosmo. Plus, with outdoor seating on First, it promises to be a great spot for people watching. Advance registration or reservations are recommended for most of the following events. Farm Fresh This week's farmers markets feature fresh, local crops of Bing cherries, various lettuces (with names like Merlot and Pablo Crispleaf), sorrel, bamboo shoots, and apriums—an apricot/plum hybrid. Also available at most markets are eggs from barnyard-wandering hens, a variety of cheeses, wild fish, and organic, pasture-raised beef and pork. Drink Up Thursday, June 29 Want to get a little tipsy with the former star of ABC's The Bachelor? At this free wine tasting, Andrew Firestone (who happens to be the great-grandson of the tire magnate) will be on hand to promote his family's wines, one of which earned a 90-point score from Wine Enthusiast. SODO On the Plate Thursday, June 29 If wine tastings are not quite your thing, this four-course Mac and Jack's brewmaster dinner might be more your speed. The menu features shrimp ceviche paired with Hefeweizen, Dungeness crab with IPA, and Kobe beef Salisbury steak (almost an oxymoron) accompanied by African Amber. DOWNTOWN Back to School Thursday, June 29 If you like spicy food, but aren't quite sure how to create that heat in your own kitchen, you might enjoy Some Like it Hot,a class on how to cook with chile peppers. Using both fresh and dried chiles, you'll create a completely vegetarian menu, including peach apricot salsa, tofu with smoked barbecue sauce, and hot pepper purées.
