Film School + Swords + Talkdemonic

Crocodile Cafe, 9 p.m. $8

Islands + Busdriver + Cadence Weapon

Neumo's, 8 p.m. $10 adv./$12 All ages

Seattle Weekly PickMirah

Sometimes Washington gets to keep Mirah Yom Tov Zeitlyn—like during the handful of years she spent recording spectacularly tender (not twee) albums like Advisory Committee and Cold, Cold Water for K Records—and sometimes she's rambling through her native Pennsylvania. Lucky for us, there are few better ways to kick off summer than a performance from her—and with Spectratone International tonight, she presents "Share This Place: Songs of Small Creatures." The Evolutionary Jass Band and the Toids also play. Tractor Tavern, 8 p.m. $8

Panda and Angel + Fleet Foxes + Tiny Vipers

War Room, 9 p.m. $5

Slantooth + Ted Lee + Shapeshifter + Audiojihad

Tonight Nectar and ToST regular DJ Shapeshifter is joined by local drum and bass mainstay Slantooth, and Audiojihad for "Beats for a Cause," which benefits the leukemia and lymphoma society. Nectar, 10 p.m. $5

Thursday, May 11

Seattle Weekly PickDemolition Doll Rods

Hotness is as hotness does, where the Detroit trio (one dude, two chicks) Demolition Doll Rods are concerned, it does a fair bit. Ordinarily, we wouldn't buy into nearly naked garage rock, but you can't argue with a gorgeous, barely clothed, blond guitar player who really can play. Coconut Cool-outs, Unnatural Helpers, and Angelo round out the bill. Sunset Tavern, 8 p.m. $7

Goldfrapp

Showbox, 8 p.m. $15 adv./$17

Friday, May 12

Dept of Energy + The Kingdom + Water Kill the Sun

They used to be (more or less) Dear John Letters, they're led by singer/songwriter Robb Benson, and they don't have a bass player. They are Dept. of Energy, and, thanks to Benson's stylish songs, they still fit in the Seattle folk/indie drawer. And don't worry, you won't miss the bass. Comet Tavern, 9 p.m. $5

Jen Wood + The Maldives

Wood is a veteran Seattle performer, having long ago cut her teeth as a riot grrrl with Bonfire Madigan in Tattle Tale, and since becoming a seasoned singer-songwriter with increasing emotional depth. The Maldives are poised to mark the hearts of the indie country scene with their Neil Young–inspired harmonies. CHAC, 7:30 p.m. $6

Mos Def + Carlos Mencia + Mix Master Mike + Phantom Planet + U.S.E.

Edmundson Pavilion, UW, 3870 Montlake Blvd., 800-325-7328, 4 p.m. $18 w/UW ID/$28

Mark Olson and Gary Louris (The Jayhawks)

When Mark Olson and Gary Louris reunited for Olson's December's Child, it bore all the markings of a one-off. But now, Jayhawks fans are being treated to a reunion by the golden-voiced frontmen. It's the closest thing to a Jayhawks reunion you'll get, or need, for that matter. Showbox, 8 p.m. $17 adv./$20

Quasi Nada + Jerry Abstract + DJ Recess + Bshorty

You'll hear Quasi Nada's eclectic, polyrhythmic grooves and Latin-inspired dance jams on KEXP's Wo' Pop and KBCS' Daily Planet, but this well-rounded bill is an extra incentive to try them on live, if you haven't already. The night is a mash-up of their "modern global" with the techno stylings of Abstract and Recess, and the beat-box wizardry of Bshorty. Solid. Nectar, 10 p.m. $6

Starlight Mints + Dios Malos + the Octopus Project

The sugary sweet pop quintet is celebrating the release of Drowaton ("not a word" backward) on Seattle's own Barsuk. With deep '60s roots and orchestral psych-rock style, the band continues in the weirdo pop tradition once mastered by the Beatles and the Kinks. Neumo's, 8 p.m. $10

Saturday, May 13

The Cougars + The Shocker + The Valley

Wondering what's up with L7's Jennifer Finch? Here's what's up: the Shocker—a fantastic name, to be sure—a new band with a new album, Up Your Ass Tray (GoKart) out this May. If all the strum-and-twang around here is putting you to sleep, wake the fuck up at this show, with California's Cougars and the Valley. Comet Tavern, 9 p.m. $7

Digital Underground

Something's going on here. Scheduled a week before their P-funk idols, Shock-G and company make a rare appearance in Seattle, presumably to sing us "The Humpty Dance," along with their lesser-known hits from the time right before gangsta became the only way to walk. With Velvet Jonz, and Sonny Bonoho. Chop Suey, 10 p.m. $15 adv./$18

Seattle Weekly PickMon Frere (CD release) + the Emergency + Siberian + Wallpaper

The precocious electro-rock trio of Nouela Johnston (vocals), Kyle Swisher (guitar) and Dustin McGhie (drums) are more proof that you don't need no stinking bassist to make a hell of a memorable racket. And theirs is getting better all the time, as evidenced by the new full-length Blood, Sweat, and Swords (Cake). El Corazon, 4:30 p.m. $8 All ages

Mute Math + The Listening + Under the Influence of Giants

On record, Mute Math come across as a electro-rock act that mixes hip-hop beats, strained vocals, and piano flourishes. Onstage, they've been known to switch off instruments, dive into experimental divergences, and even bust out acrobatic leaps. Crocodile Cafe, 9 p.m. $15 All ages

Sunday, May 14

Warning Broken Machine + Red Squirrel + Nome + Arctic Crash

Ten experimental/noise projects make up this "Splinter Squid Affair," brought to you in part by the incredibly eclectic record wranglers at Wallingford's Electric Heavyland. We can only vouch for the corrosive sounds of Syphilis Sauna, but check out Red Squirrel, Nome, Arctic Crash, NovaHead Vs. ChickenTron, Arachnid Arcade, Withdrawal Method, Hemmingway, and Ffej to make your own judgments. Seattle Drum School L.A.B., 7 p.m. $5
