This proactive crew of DJ-producers don't waste any time, whether they're releasing future jazz and neo-soul singles on their SunTzu label, hosting their broken-beat brethren from around the country in Seattle via top-notch show bookings, or manning the boards every Saturday morning on their KBCS show, Soul City Radio. Whether it's Dr. J, J-Justice, AC Lewis, or Atlee behind the decks, the track selection is always tight. DJ/Turntablist. Between and after bands.

Altered States of Funk

This band's one and only mission is "to make you groove!" Delivering pure funk in a manner that would make even James Brown shake it, Mr. T, Moose, Funk Doc, Low End Theory, Sasquatch, Da Funkscribe, and Winfield team up to make music with Southern soul and hip grooves. All the members manage to find their own unique, improvisational niche while still coming together in climactic unison, creating heart-stopping, feet-shuffling performances that both young and old can appreciate. Soul/R&B. 7 p.m.

The Long Ranger

From rocking basement birthday parties to opening shows for the Go! Team and Jamie Lidell, this electro-pop trio has got what it takes to "shake a ass in the people!" Mastermind Ted Chen programs the beats and sings, with help from his keyboardist/backup vocalist/sister Sylvia (once known as Shorty Circuit) and guitarist Seth, who also plays with Ted in pop band the Stereo Future. With enough sexy come-ons and nonironic '80s nostalgia for five lesser bands, it's clear the Long Ranger is no simple side project. Electronica. 8 p.m.

Beehive

Since forming in 2003, the "rocktronica" duo of Alethea Eichhorn (aka Butterfly Beats) and David Miller (B-Wise Belly) buzz with a sound that's more than the sum of their influences. Incidentally, the two met while studying neurobiology together at Seattle U, so that could explain their precocious chemistry. 2004's Cycle A garnered time on KEXP, as did their remix for local electronica act the Fading Collection. Their Operation Artichoke EP was released this March. Electronica. 9 p.m.

Choklate

After relocating to Seattle from California in 2002, sultry R&B vocalist Choklate hooked up with hip-hop producers Bean One, Vitamin D, and Jake One, who helped refine the luscious sound for her upcoming sophomore album. Classy and contemporary at the same time, Choklate performs live with a talented full band including Kevin Hudson on bass, Darius Willrich on keyboards, Dvonne Lewis on drums, Whitney James on vocal backup, and "the Audience" on energy. Soul/R&B. 10 p.m.

Beyond Reality

It's hard to find decent show reviews of Beyond Reality, Seattle's only (we think) mom/son hip-hop duo, and there may be a good reason why. We don't imagine Upendo "Upi" Selassie plays many late-night shows, since there's school—elementary school— to get to in the a.m. Along with his skillful MC Kylea, the drummer man whips up soulful positivity while expertly crafted hip-hop rhymes and rhythms play on.
