Oh, Canada: You've given us Leonard Cohen, IMAX movies, pure maple syrup, Wayne Gretzky, and . . . the Elephant & Castle. Chain pubs may not rival the stature of the Great One, but our local outpost fills a niche in Seattle's after-work scene. Coat-and-tie types looking for a place to loosen the latter, put back a pint, and play darts gather daily for the 4–7 p.m. happy hour. Dressier patrons headed to the 5th Avenue Theatre find E&C a convenient place to stop for pre-show drinks and snacks. The red phone booth at the entrance cues you into the decor—mirrors and brass rails galore, like an upscale English watering hole circa 1980—and to the menu, which includes bar standards like potato skins and chicken wings (both $4). Elephant & Castle's best lure is the wide array of local and imported beers on tap; all are $1 off the regular price, as are glasses of wine. Other good deals: $3 well drinks and half-price bottles of wine. At that price, you may want to come back for the late-night happy hour, from 10 p.m. to close. 1415 Fifth Avenue, 206-624-9977, www.elephantcastle.com. DOWNTOWN
