This not-so-cafelike joint in Pioneer Square offers typical bar appetizers and dirt-cheap happy-hour specials. For $2, you can choose from a well drink or a decent variety of drafts, from a pint of reliable Mac & Jack's to specials like the Red Hook Kona Fire Rock Pale Ale. Ask the friendly bartender for a taste of anything on tap, and he'll graciously agree as he hums along to the Hendrix or Beatles classic coming out of the speakers. $5.50 gets you a good-sized pizza, though the veggie version, topped with only a few sparse artichoke hearts and purple onions, isn't too impressive. The mini-burgers have the appeal of White Castle sliders, but for two bucks you can't really go wrong. J&M has your standard pub atmosphere: one enormous, dimly lit room with dark-wood furniture, an eclectic collection of paintings, and a peel 'n' stick type of raised ceiling. Artsy students on a tight budget gather around the back tables, and scruffy regulars on bar stools watch ESPN. It's just right if you aren't keen on battling stuffy "professionals" for a lounge seat and a chance to see and be seen. 201 First Ave. S., 206-292-0663. PIONEER SQUARE
