Dave Chappelle

Currently MIA from Comedy Central, where his raunchy wit balanced Jon Stewart’s irony, Chappelle brings his outsized stand-up persona to the big screen with Dave Chappelle’s Block Party, a riff on the 1973 concert documentary Wattstax. Here, the setting is Brooklyn, 2004, where he reunites the Fugees and invites other musical guests, including Kanye West, John Legend, and Erykah Badu. By acting as MC, of course, he claims a kind of paternal dominion over them all. In the original doc, Richard Pryor was more a supporting act; here, Chappelle acts as organizing principal, and director-for-hire Michel Gondry (Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind) should help keep things moving to his satisfaction. Opens March 3.
