Fiona Apple, Holiday shows, and Rent

Wed – Music

Breakup, schmeakup. Fiona Apple gets over it in glorious form on her long-awaited Extraordinary Machine. A mix of romantic resignation, jaunty pseudo–show tunes, and poignant, funny farewells to lovers past, it’s her best album yet. 8 p.m. Wed., Nov. 23. $40. Moore Theatre, 1932 Second Ave., 206-467-5510, www.themoore.com. NEAL SCHINDLER

Fri – Performance

Be warned: Holiday shows descend like needles from a month-old Christmas tree starting the day after Thanksgiving, including Pacific Northwest Ballet’s Nutcracker, ACT Theatre’s A Christmas Carol, Taproot’s new The Trial of Ebenezer Scrooge, and other, spoofier fare. See performance calendars for details. LYNN JACOBSON

Chris (Home Alone) Columbus didn’t sound like the ideal movie director to adapt the least glitzy Broadway smash musical in history, but it’s his dazzling version that will make the late Jonathan Larson’s masterpiece Rent immortal. It might just follow Chicago to the Oscars. See review. Opens Friday, Nov. 25, in several theaters. TIM APPELO
