Maplewild Bakery and Cafe

To some, the idea of a whole-wheat, vegan cinnamon roll is about as appealing as decaf Red Bull or low-fat foie gras, and that's fine. If everyone were interested in dairy-free, decadent coils of chewy sweet roll slathered with caramel-y cinnamon and sugar and covered with sticky white icing, the crew at Maplewild Bakery and Cafe would sell out of these things quicker than they already do. Make no mistake: Maplewild's cinnamon roll ($2.75, and plenty big enough to share) is made with whole-wheat dough and soybean oil instead of milk, eggs, and butter, but no one is trying to pass it off as health food. For vegans and dairy-eating sweetfreaks alike, these impossibly moist, tender, and delightfully squishy things are, simply, an addiction—but one we don't have to feel too guilty about. Maplewild also offers dairy-free sweets; they make a different vegan berry scone ($1.75) every day, depending on the season and what's fresh. 15217 21st Ave. S.W., 206-244-0737. BURIEN
