Days are getting darker and colder, yes, but many area farmers markets are still in full swing. Burien's market finished last week, and the Lake City and Columbia City markets are drawing to a close (their last days are Thursday, Oct. 20, and Wednesday, Oct. 26, respectively), but the U District and West Seattle markets will continue until December, and you can shop for produce on Broadway until the Sunday before Thanksgiving. (The Ballard and Madison/Capitol Hill markets run year round.) And speaking of Thanksgiving: Gorgeous winter squash are in abundance, and yellow and white corn is sweet, tender, and fragrant. Take advantage of freshly harvested nuts (walnuts, hazelnuts, chestnuts, and peanuts) and wild mushrooms (chanterelles, lobster, hedgehog, and more), and at the U District market only, try some of Taki Farm's loofah. Yep, soup loofah is related to the shower loofah—they're both gourds—and it's in season now.
