NEWS The annual Phabulous Phinney Pig Out hits 12 Phinney/Greenwood restaurants on Thursday, Oct. 6, to fight hunger in North Seattle. Various restaurants from El Chupacabra to Carmelita to Santa Fe Cafe have agreed to donate a portion of sales to the PNA Soup Kitchens (which are run in conjunction with St. John United Lutheran Church and Calvary Lutheran Church). ON THE PLATE Now The 5 Spot in Queen Anne ushers in autumn with its new At Home in America's Heartland menu (through Nov. 29). Serving everything from Wisconsin cheese curds to Oktoberfest spare ribs and apple sauerkraut to blue-ribbon cherry cobbler with a scoop of vanilla ice cream. QUEEN ANNE All of September The second annual Dinner at 8 is in its last few days, celebrating 26 of Seattle's restaurants with a special dinner menu featuring three courses (a selection of starters, entrées, and desserts) for $20 (doesn't include drinks, tax or gratuity). Many of the restaurants from last year like Ten Mercer, the Cellar Bistro, and Bick's Broadview Grill are returnees, and other restaurants like Dulces Latin Bistro and Ibiza Dinner Club were added this year. Friday, Sept. 30–Sunday, Oct. 2 The St. Demetrios Greek Festival is coming up—prepare to indulge in a "Taste of Greece." There will be gyros and souvlakia on the grill, baklava and other pastries, along with Greek dancing and traditional costumes. A lunch special (complete Greek-style chicken or fish lunch for $8) is available for those only able to briefly slip away from work. BURIEN Sunday, Oct. 2 Michael Ableman discusses organic farmers and artisans who are create nourishing and flavorful food in his book, Fields of Plenty: A Farmer's Journey in Search of Real Food and the People Who Grow It. SEATTLE CENTER THE GRAPEVINE Saturday, Oct. 1–Monday, Oct. 31 The tasting rooms of wineries in the Yakima Valley and Red Mountain are alive this month with the creations of 40 local artists. Wineries will be decked out in works by regional talent, and visitors will have the chance to not only bring wine home, they'll also be able to score original art. Look for the pieces incorporating cork (a requirement for each artist) and observe the way in which wineries and artists are working together to promote creativity and Savor the Art. Sunday, Oct. 2–Sunday, Nov. 13 Introduction to Wine classes with sommelier Arnie Millan begin the first Sunday of October and continue through fall, covering topics like various wine flavors, the history of wine, basics of winemaking, pairing wine and food, and current trends.
