Christian Swenson started out as a dancer, but he's morphing into something much more odd and interesting. Adding mime, singing, and acting to his bag of tricks, he's developed what he calls "human jazz"—the physical version of sound effects. The end result is hard to describe, but ridiculously easy to like. For this program, he joins forces with Andy Shaw to create what they've coined "musical behavior." Northwest Chamber Orchestra

"An extraordinary program of three living American composers. . ." opens the press release for the NWCO's season-opening gala—unfortunately, an all-American program is still extraordinary, but music director Ralf Gothoni is making the unusual a priority for his orchestra. William Bolcom's Concerto Serenade (with violinist Marjorie Kransberg-Talvi) and John Adams' Shaker Loops are joined by the premiere of Philip Glass' Piano Concerto No. 2, a work commemorating the Lewis and Clark bicentennial. The three movements are evocatively titled "The Vision," "Sacagawea," and "The Land," and the middle one, in honor of the explorers' Shoshone guide, features Native American flutist R. Carlos Nakai. Since the concert is expected to be sold-out, NWCO is also selling tickets to the same day's 10 a.m. rehearsal.
