Gov. Gary Locke announced that Saturday, Aug. 7, officially started Farmers Market Week. That means it's high time to check out the market tables still overflowing with various melons (some of which we've never even heard of), not to mention plump berries, sugary pastries, and gorgeous flowers. And don't forget that bringing the tykes along is a wonderful idea, especially with "Zucchini 500" races at the Columbia City, Magnolia, West Seattle, and Lake City markets. The races allow kids to create cars out of vegetables and wooden wheels, then engage in high-speed squash competition (or at least attempt to). While they're busy playing with their food, you'll have time to inspect all the fresh nectarines, tomatoes, carrots, and piles of sweet corn, plus geoducks from Taylor Shellfish.
