In about three weeks I am turning 21! Hallelujah! And I need some suggestions as far as the bar scene in Seattle goes. Where can I find a hip, swanky place to sit and have some drinks, maybe listen to some music? Nothing too loud, nothing dirty. I am talkin' a dressed-up, martini-drinkin' kinda thing. Any ideas?

Hungry replies: And many happy returns of the day to you, young lady or gent! Fine drinkeries for your birthday pleasure abound in the Jet City. Thirsty is a particular admirer of the 50-cent deviled eggs of ING (1530 Bellevue, 329-5388)—yes, really, they serve deviled eggs, which keep Thirsty quiet whilst one revels in the deep red walls and perfectly dry martinis of this quietly swank spot. Around the corner, the CAPITOL CLUB (414 E. Pine, 325-2149) has a nice Casablanca feel and its own large, well-prepared martinis, as well as a cushy, haremlike room downstairs you may reserve for a group if you phone in advance. Down Pine Street, the mighty BALTIC ROOM (1207 E. Pine, 625-4444) is a big, gorgeous deco bar/club with a cozy fireplace and nice booths upstairs, but go early or check to be sure that the music they've got lined up is to your birthday tastes. Also big and deco on Capitol Hill, BARǁ (1510 11th, 325-8263; that's "bar-sah," for extra Euro chic) offers gigantic, out-of-scale booths that you might send a birthday minion to stake out early whilst you arrive with the rest of the entourage at your leisure. Then there's always the CLOUD ROOM (1619 Ninth, 682-0100) on the top floor of the Camlin Hotel: piano bar, view, and so forth; then there's always, also, the ALIBI ROOM (85 Pike (Post Alley), 623-3180), in its sneaky location under the Market; and, oh, so many more it makes a person too thirsty to contemplate this question further. Thirsty replies: Your Twenty-One Run! Yeah, dog! Be sure you do not let anyone order you something called a "prairie fire"! Hungry bought me one when I turned 21 as a "special birthday drink"! But it is a trick! Made of awful Bacardi 151 mixed half-and-half with Tabasco sauce! I thought my head was going to fly right off my body! And remember the best place to vomit is in the toilet! Followed by the gutter! Happy birthday and welcome to the world of legal drinking! Whoo-hoo!
