FOR A FOOTBALL GAME played in a baseball-only stadium, which was moved here from Hawaii mainly because the annual backdrop of empty seats embarrassed TV executives, our inaugural Seattle Bowl proved quite a contest.

At least the matchup had some marquee value—a 9-2 Stanford team facing a once highly regarded Georgia Tech squad that fell apart down the stretch, losing three of its last four games and seeing coach George O'Leary depart for Notre Dame (where he promptly resigned after it was revealed he had lied on his r鳵m驮

Georgia Tech's 24-14 victory delighted Yellow Jacket fans. So much so, that an impressive 81 percent voted in the Atlanta Journal-Constitution's instant Web poll to offer interim coach Mac McWhorter the permanent job. In the Bay Area, the San Francisco Chronicle merely blasted Stanford as underachievers under the derisive headline "Sheepish in Seattle."
