Where to Give

Charities in need this season.

DOWNTOWN EMERGENCY SERVICE CENTER (DESC) 517 Third, 464-1570.

WHAT: DESC provides a roof, sleeping mats, showers, clean clothes, cups of coffee, and access to social services for the most impoverished people in our community. The organization operates on a shoestring budget, depending on uncertain grants and donations. Help DESC’s mentally ill, physically and developmentally disabled, and down-on-their-luck clients by donating to this worthiest of causes.

DONATE: New socks, hats, gloves, and underwear will be especially appreciated as they will likely be the only Christmas gifts these people receive. Also needed: coats (new and used) and other warm clothing, shoes, blankets (new and used), towels (new and used), sugar, coffee creamer, and financial support. Or volunteer your time, on Christmas or any day, by calling Leslie Schicht, volunteer coordinator, at 464-1570 ext. 3003.

DONATION DROP-OFF LOCATION: 507 Third. 8:30 a.m.-5 p.m. Mon.-Fri.

PASADO’S SAFE HAVEN P.O. Box 171, Sultan, WA., 98294, 360-793-9393 or www.pasadosafehaven.org.

WHAT: Meet Jimmy the dog, whose leg was broken either by being kicked or hit with a blunt instrument like a bat. He lay in a city shelter, on cold concrete with no pain medication, no veterinary care, no hope. Meet Babs the donkey, whose owners used to race ATVs around her while practicing “roping” for the rodeo, putting her in a continual state of hysteria and fear. These are just two of the many animals rescued by Pasado’s Safe Haven-two animals who now have the care and protection needed to live peaceful lives. Finally, meet Susan Michaels, the diligent co-founder of the 24-hour rescue and rehabilitation center, a woman with amazing convictions who’s asking for help, supplies, and donations on behalf of the animals.

DONATE: Storage space, sturdy buckets, animal grooming tools, a weed-whacker, feed certificates (charge by phone from Monroe Farm & Feed, 360-794-4663), cat litter (old-fashioned variety), stamps. Services needed: plumbing for water line; printing services. Medical supplies needed: 3- by 3-inch gauze for the spay station or 1-cc syringes with needles. Dream wish: More pastureland! Have any land that some animals can live on? Your time and/or money is appreciated!

WASHINGTON STATE COMBINED FUND DRIVE P.O. Box 47530, Olympia, WA., 98504-7530, 888-353-9396 or www.hr.dop.wa.gov/cfd/contents.htm.
