DAMN THAT John Elway.
The former Denver Broncos quarterback, who crushed many Seahawk playoff drives in his day, was among the weapons used by the city of Denver in its effort to steal away our Boeing Company headquarters. According to a recent New York Times story by reporter Aileen Cho, visits from star athletes like John the Jerk are just one technique that city officials are using to charm relocating business leaders. (Reviving his old reputation of never winning the big one, Elway and Denver lost Boeing to rival Chicago.)
Can we learn from their example? Not necessarily. The three best-known players on the hard-charging Mariners speak English as a second language. And giving corporate executives extensive face time with combative Sonics superstar Gary Payton might not prove such a brilliant idea.
